 scariest movies

this is a little different i was just discussing the #1 film with someone and came up with the idea. it is an accident that it got left off best horror films- it would have been #2 or #1. Not in order but at the top.

10. Them- my comments on best horror films hold true- a little cheesy now, but when I was a kid....

9. Nightmare on Elm Street- I could tell you a story about my stoner days and looking for what we thought would be a funny movie to watch stoned- it still gives me shivers.

8. The Fog- much as I like Tom Welling, not the new version- the original John Carpenter classic.

7. Primal Fear- also mentioned elsewhere- not scary as such, but the ending is so shocking, it will leave you very unnerved.

6. The Shining (mini-series version) what it lost in the campy, inferior version with Jack Nicholas, this scary book got back in the great miniseries version that King himself wrote.

5. The Stand- one of the best of the doomsday thrillers.

4. The Omega Man- I dont know if it was seeing it as a kid, but this one scared the heck out of me.

3. Halloween- the original of the genre- come on, we all jumped when he kept coming back to life.

2. Silence of the Lambs- although it is my favorite movie overall, it only comes in second here. Still it is truly scary in its depictions of killers, considering the people I work with.

1. Prince of Darkness- oh, the stories I could tell about the times I have seen this one. Never see it if you are living on the streets, or working around street people. Its funny how they will all start to look like the ones in this movie. Brilliant performances by Jameson Parker, Donald Pleasance, and Alice Cooper, who just looks scary as all get out by looking like he does on stage, and directed by John Carpenter. Nothing ever scared me like this one.

 favorite comic strips

not in order except at the top.
10. Peanuts- I dont care if Schutlz is dead- the reprints are still worth reading.

9. Rose is Rose- there is something strangely appealing about how they percieve the world around them.

8. B.C.- with its at times overtly Christian themes, its impossible to leave off the list.

7. Pickles- I think they remind everyone of their parents- I know its my parents' favorite.

6. Calvin and Hobbes- another great strip that is immortal- I can read the old ones forever.

5. The Far Side- I dont see it anymore, but have almost all of the collections, and it may have been the best ever.

4. Garfield- I dont know how he keeps it funny after all of this time, but I know Ive had at least one cat that looked like Garfield and loved Lasagna.

3. Sherman's Lagoon- this strip is a scream- the world through the eyes of a shark named Sherman and his family and buddies. favorite quote- "Humans, the other white meat", will give you an idea of the wonderfully black humor of the strip. It is available online if you dont get it in your paper.

2. Foxtrot- another darkly funny strip that I own almost all of the collections of.

1. Dilbert- the first one I look for everyday. It is not only a brilliantly funny strip, it spawned a great cartoon, although it only lasted two seasons.

 ultimate Avengers

I have said that I may deviate once in a while from lists when I have an extraordinary reason. This new cartoon movie from Marvel definitely rates it. Brought to us by the people who brought us the recent Spiderman and X-Men cartoon series, I had high hopes for it, which were quickly dashed. Anyone who reads this knows that I love quality cartoons, but this was awful. Dont waste the money even to rent it. Please, Marvel, if you are going to do adaptions to movies, do a better job of it. Take some notes from the quality of the Batman cartoon movies, or the JLA.

 favorite actors

Not necessarily in order except at the top.

10. Brad Pitt- for some reason, we always think that the guys that the girls go for arent good actors- he is a great one, with a number of great movies under his belt. Hard to pick a favorite, but actually I loved him best in Legends of the Fall, as it was a character that reminded me of me in my wilder days.

9. James Cagney- I loved him as a good and bad guy, but White Heat, which just missed my top 10 movie list, is my favorite.

8. John Wayne- too many great movies to leave him off, but The Searchers, as I said previously was his best.

7. Anthony Hopkins- not only a lot of great movies, but what is almost universally considered to be the greatest villain portrayal ever in my favorite movie, The Silence of the Lambs.

6. Robert DeNiro- its funny with him, I didnt like his stuff as much when I was younger. I think my favorite is one that might surprise some- Heat, which played him against my next choice.

5. Al Pacino- see previous entry- its pretty much the same story.

4. William Powell- tons of great movies, but one role alone would have put him on here- Nick Charles of the Thin Man series.

3. Denzel Washington- my favorite modern actor- as many great movies as he has done, two absolutely stand out for me- Courage Under Fire, and Devil in a Blue Dress.

2. Humphrey Bogart- I dont think I even have to explain this one, although my personal favorite isnt his most famous- The Big Sleep, with a brilliant portrayal of Phillip Marlowe. Wish he was alive to recreate the role in either of the great sequels to the novel by Robert B. Parker.

1. Cary Grant- with four movies on my top 10 list of movies, who else? My personal favorite could be any of them, but Id have to favor Charade.

best Sci-fi fantasy besides time travel stories

I decided I needed to do a seperate list, because of the great ones on here. Not in order but at the top.

10. Minority Report- if only Spielberg and Cruise had made War of the Worlds as good as this- one of the best action/scifi movies ever.

9. The Matrix movies- I have to lump these together, unlike the LOTR movies, as I dont think I would put any one alone on here, especially since I think they blatantly stole from another one on here.

8. Star Wars- Revenge of the Sith- all year it has been a love hate thing with this movie when I talk to people- as you can see, Im one who loved it.

7. The Two Towers- the series got better with each movie- this was a great transitional one.

6. Dark City- from here on out, its pretty much a toss up except for #1. This is the movie that The Matrix ripped off. If you havent seen it, remember when you do that it came first, and I still think it was better. A great supporting performance by a pre-24 Kiefer Sutherland.

5. Star Wars- Revenge of the Jedi- my personal favorite of the series, and if you have seen the new DVD, sorry for all you purists, but I like the change made at the end.

4. The Abyss, director's cut- If you havent seen it with the restored footage from James Cameron, you havent really seen the movie. Forget Titanic, this is his best film.

3. War of the Worlds (1953)- the recent version isnt even in the same league as this one. This is the best classic Sci Fi film hands down.

2. Blade Runner, director's cut- another great movie that has to be seen in its restored form to be understood, as much as that is possible (Ive seen it around a dozen times and am still working on it .

1. LOTR- The Return of the King- 4 or 5 times seeing this movie has never diminished its impact. It truly deserved the best picture, and Im sure would have been on AFI's top 100 movie list if that hadnt already come out. My personal favorite.

note- I didnt leave Fellowship of the Ring off of the list out of dislike- it would have been top 15 or so, but as I said with The Two Towers, the series got better with each movie.
