best movies never to win an oscar

In honor of this year's nominations, which basically suck, here are my nominations. They include two from this year which weren't even nominated, but sure as heck deserved it. Again, the list isnt a precise order. I wont bother including movies from my favorites list, as they all lost out in their years except for the first two, which won Best Picture in their years.

10. Fargo- just missed my top ten favorite movies- beaten out by The English Patient? Give me a break.

9. As Good as it Gets- the first of two movies on this list beaten out by Titanic, which just wasnt that good.

8. The Interpreter- from this year- one of the best Hitchcock style thrillers Ive seen in years, and so clean except for a little language and some violence that even some of the major Christian movie sites recommend it. The second best movie this year.

7. Citizen Kane- also just missed my top 10 list.

6. A Simple Plan- it was nominated, but lost- a great adaption of one of the best books I have ever read (another forthcoming category).

5. Casablanca- another near miss from my top 10 list. You could include almost anything with Humphrey Bogart or James Cagney on this list.

4. Jaws- I dont even remember what beat it out, but this is an incredible movie, and everyone knows the music.

3. Batman Begins- the best movie this year, and easily the best superhero film of all time- mainly because it doesnt feel like a superhero film until the end.

2. The Lion King- the best cartoon ever, and way better than Forrest Gump, which was the winner that beat it out.

1. LA Confidential- the best crime noir film ever. Titanic wasnt even in the same class as this movie. Also Russel Crowe's best, and features numerous other oscar winners, including Kim Bassinger, who won for this movie.

 best movies of all time

I will probably have categories for different types of films at some time, but for now, here is the best of the best.

10. North by Northwest- Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant- a combination youll see on here again.

9. The Thin Man- the movie that all mystery comedies must be measured against, and the start of a great series of movies. At least two of the sequels would be in my top 100.

8. Bringing up Baby- Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn and a Cheetah named Baby- one of a few on this list that make me laugh so much it hurts.

7. The Searchers- forget True Grit- this is what John Wayne should have won the Oscar for- dark, and with Wayne playing a very different character, but a must see.

6. The Sound of Music- I couldnt leave my favorite musical off the list.

5. Charade- again, Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant, this time with Audrey Hepburn. The Truth about Charlie was a horrible remake of this- dont waste time with the remake- see the original.

4. Raiders of the Lost Ark- the adventure against which all others must be measured, with one of my favorite movie quotes (yes, Im sure that will be a category)- Indiana Jones when asked what he would do next- "I dont know, Im making this up as I go along".

3. Arsenic and Old Lace- ok, by now you have probably figured out that Cary Grant is my favorite actor. If you have seen it, you know why its on the list. An insanely funny movie about an insane family, and another great line, from Cary- "Insanity doesnt run in this family, it gallops".

2. Schindler's List- two modern films to finish the list, and the two greatest portrayals of evil ever. The closest thing to a unanimous pick for a best picture and best director Oscars ever. Every major critic picked it as the best film of 1993, and for once they had it right.

1. Silence of the Lambs- I once considered studying criminology and psychology to become a profiler after I got off of the streets, and this was my inspiration. Even though that will never be, there is no movie that I can watch over and over more, and it has the villain repeatedly voted the greatest of all time by critics. And, if youve seen it, you can never forget the final sequence in the basement, and the greatest closing line of any movie- "Id love to stay and chat, Clarisse, but I have to dine on an old friend".

10 worst shows of all time

10. Friends- a lot of these could be in any order, but this one comes to mind first. If all of my friends were like these losers, I would probably kill myself.

9. Desperate Housewives- Where to start? How about that it being so highly rated is a sure sign of the coming appocalypse.

8. Enterprise- this show, with little exception, was an embarrassment to the Star Trek franchise. Its only good episodes involved time subplots or the Brent Spiner guest ark.

7.My Mother the Car- yes it was as awful as all of the other critics say.

6. The Incredible Hulk- this choice will get some people upset, and my main beef isnt with Bill Bixby. but, Lou Ferigno was so bad, it earned the show a place on the list.

5. Tele-Tubbies- I actually told my sister in law I would take her to court if she forced my niece to watch this garbage. Im not sure I was joking.

4. Highlander the Raven- the show Highlander barely missed my list of all-time favorites, but this one definitely belongs here.

3. The Munsters- Maybe I never got the joke, but even as a kid, I despised this show. It just wasnt funny.

2. Any show with Lucille Ball- hey, it isnt only me- I know a lot of people who just didnt think she was funny at all.

1. Commander in Chief- I know, it hasnt even been a full season, but this is the most blatant example of Hollywood's left leaning politics in history. Is there anyone out there that has watched it (I lasted through one episode and felt like taking a shower) and doesnt recognize it as a kickoff for Hilary's presidential campaign? If it was a conservative, the press and everyone else would be tearing the show apart.

 Best TV shows, all-time

in descending order-
10. Poirot- Although he has been played by screen greats Albert Finney and Peter Ustinov, when I read an Agatha Christie novel with him in it, it's David Suchet I always picture in the role.

9. 24- along with House, I left it off my other list by accident. House is a very good show, but 24 is one of the best ever in only its 5th season.

8. Magnum PI- what the heck- people kid me that I look a little like Tom Selleck, so how could I leave this off- actually, I loved the show, and could just make this one about it's creator's shows, which also include Jag and Airwolf that I loved. Kudos to Donald Bellasario, its creator.

7. Batman Beyond- Okay, so it was an animated series- it took what sounded like the world's dumbest concept and made an incredible series out of it. And, its one movie, "Batman Beyond- The Return of the Joker" was the best Batman movie next to Batman Begins. I kid you not- every Batman fan that has seen it that i know of agrees.

6. Scooby-Doo- ok, I know what youre thinking, but this wont all be cartoons, but I had to include this one. AS a huge mystery fan, even as a kid, this was just what I needed. And, I still watch the movies when they come out, both the animated and regular ones.

5. Murder she Wrote- if you think youre seeing a Mystery theme here, youre right. Not that they had a lot of great mysteries, but you gotta love Angela Lansbury.

4. Twilight Zone- Rod Serling- need I say more? One of the true geniuses of TV.

3. Columbo- at least two shows on my previous list with quirky detectives owe their success to this show. Remember, the original raincoat is in the Smithsonian- a fitting tribute.

2. The Star Trek Franchise- it probably would have made number 1 if not for Enterprise, which with a few exceptions, was truly awful. But, DS9 alone would have made this list, and Voyager and Next Generation would have made top 25 at least.

1. The Law and Order franchise- it seems fitting to put them all together for this. SVU and CI would have probably been on this list alone, and the original was at least top 25 as well.

 intro

Okay, if youre looking, youre wondering what its about. I am trying to stay specific to issues with my other blog on the homeless, and am going to talk about other stuff here, like my favorites in things. I have been reading all different types of books, watching all different types of movies and TV shows, and listening to all different types of music all of my life. Here's my opinions, and when I have time, I will try to post a list of some of my favorites, or least favorites, all depending. It will be top or bottom 10, depending on what side Im coming from. today's list- favorite TV shows currently on:

1. Law and Order: Special Victims Unit- I could have made it a tie between the first few, but this is the one that always comes to the top. It is way better than the original, and so true to life at times that it is down right scary. And I never thought I would say I love a rapper, but I could watch Ice-T all day. It is over-all the best written, best acted show on TV, period.

2. Cold Case- By far, better than any of the CSI shows- I try to be a tough guy, but it almost always makes me cry at the end, and has given me a real love for cold case mysteries, both real and fictional.

3. Monk- if you dont have cable, go out and get it and tune in USA at 10pm eastern- there has never been anything quite like it on TV, and the question isnt why Tony Shaloub wins so many Emmys, but why he doesnt win every year.

4. Smallville- ok, so Im 47 and love this show- who cares? Dont tell me Im the only one out there. If you saw the 100th episode last night, you dont need to ask why this show is on the list.

5. The Closer- Ok, so it was only a summer show last year, and we have to wait until this summer for season two- its as unique as Monk in its own way, and also worth getting cable for.

6. Law and Order Criminal Intent- It only got better this year by bringing back Chris Noth as Mike Logan, but I sure wish we could see more of Nicole Wallace.

7. CSI Miami- hey, what can I say, this is my favorite of them, not Las Vegas.

8. Criminal Minds- way, way above any other new show this year.

9. tie- Survivor, the Apprentice, and the Amazing Race- they are the only reality shows I watch, and I would have a hard time seperating them, but all deserved mention.
